Creating a Kitchen You'll Love to Live In

Investing in a new kitchen may very well be the most expensive outlay you will make in your home, so it makes sense to ensure you get it right - getting some expert advice can be pivotal to the success of your design.
The old saying that Kitchens are the 'heart of the home' is even more important these days - they are the central place we connect with loved ones; they are a space to unwind after a busy day and then of course they are a space to prepare food to fuel us for work and school and everything in between! Here are some of the common conundrums are often hear when we begin designing a kitchen for our clients:

Designing with Danish Principles

When I established Hygge Design in 2020, it made sense to me to name it Hygge Design, since Hygge and Design go in hand. Our design values are very much ingrained with the way Danes live - we take a humanistic approach, where we design for people for living - with simplicity, functionality, sustainability and quality at the forefront of all our designs.
So how does this translate into our designs?

Transforming your floor plan

Our recent projects have presented us with several problems clients often come to us to solve: to improve their floor plan and maximise the function and flow of their home. We love this aspect of the design process and believe it is where interior designers can add so much value to a home; we ensure every square metre is maximised; we design working zones in a kitchen to handle a family and their various tasks and in general, take a holistic approach, to ensure the whole house is working as it should, with plenty more storage being a top priority for most clients!

We thought this current project below is a good example of how we have made changes to ensure the above problems are resolved.

Homes with Hygge - Case Study

Sometimes when we walk in to a home, it instantly has a great feel to it - whilst we may not be able to pinpoint just exactly what it is, quite often enough, it is due to a well designed floor plan. The 'Dearie House' in Beaumaris is a brilliant example of a mid-century home that exhibits all the good things a home should have. It is only a modest size home, but it ticks a lot of boxes for us and demonstrates how clever design can elevate a home and the lives of those that live there.
Designed by Architect Kevin Knight in 1953, it was then renovated in 2015 by a young family, who engaged Architect Matthew Green to assist them with creating an extension suitable for a family of 5.

Our secret to creating a unique home filled with hygge

Design with Hygge

When we design for our clients, we are constantly putting ourselves in their shoes and thinking about how they move and use their home, from a bathroom on a busy school morning, to a kitchen at dinner time that needs to allow for homework; for cooking dinner and a seat for Grandpa who just popped in for a visit!

Embracing Change

Here at Hygge Design, we are known for our warm, welcoming interiors, filled with hygge! We create spaces that are enduring and functional and tick all the necessary boxes for good design. But our unique approach is due to our primary focus on emotions & people- we create a feeling, that in a sense, speaks louder than the materials and furnishings of the space. We create places in which people can connect on a deeper level.
In essence, we design for the little moments, that in return, deliver more happiness and well-being to the inhabitants of the home. This is hard to explain, but so easy to feel when you experience one of our spaces (Hygge).

International Hygge Day

There seems to be a day for everything these days, but today is one I am very happy to celebrate- International Hygge Day!
For those new to here, Hygge is a Danish word used to describe a moment and an atmosphere of warmth, well-being and cosiness with people you love. It is a time where you feel at peace and enjoy the simple pleasures of life being in the moment. I spent several years living in Denmark and after 30 plus years, Hygge is part of my way of living and my families' too.

Postcards from Denmark

Each year, Copenhagen’s 3 Days of Design invites the world into Denmark’s most iconic showrooms, studios, galleries and architectural spaces — a citywide celebration of interiors, ideas, and the people behind them. In June 2025, Carlie Fraser, Director of Melbourne-based interior design studio Hygge Design, flew north to experience it firsthand.

From sun-drenched courtyards to forest canopies, Carlie took it all in slowly, carefully, with curiosity. And she’s shared it with us; what she noticed, what stayed with her, what made her pause. That’s what you’ll find here. These are Carlie’s postcards, sent from Denmark and written in her own words.
